The Triemstra Family

We found a couple of new locations for the Triemstra’s shoot. We wanted a rugged, Western kind of setting for one of the sets. I found this great cactus farm out in Beaumont that was great for photography.

Their boy has grown quite a bit since our last shoot. Plus, they’ve got a new one!

The next John Wayne, I think.

We had the afternoon all to ourselves yesterday, so we decided to set up the backdrop for a little afternoon photo shoot. Maddie loves photoshoots. And we told Mackenzie that this was as close to the beach as she was going to get for a while.

There was a little dispute over who got to put their arm around Katelyn.

Mackenzie wanted to lie down too.

The Pitts Family

This little guy is the newest addition to the Pitts family. He’s very talented – able to be happy in a basket, in a box, and on a blanket in the park. He’s going to have to get a little lighter on his feet to keep up with his older sister. In order to get a photograph her sitting still I had to wait for the moment that she collapsed in the grass from exhaustion after running non-stop in the park.

How could you not love these guys? I had the privilege of photographing their wedding in Michigan a couple of years ago, and now I get to photograph their first daughter. Grandma and Grandpa got in on the action too. It was fun to implement Greg’s Detroit Lions vision.

Elise is One!

Jill and I want to thank all of our friends and clients for the thoughts and prayers that have been coming to us via email and Facebook. For those blog followers that don’t know, a doctor found a small malignant tumor in our oldest daughter. The last two weeks have been crazy with fear, prayers, friends, and doctors. But the prognosis is very good. We have a treatment plan and the doctors are really confident that this is just going to be a brief chapter in the beginning of Maddie’s life. Thanks to all of our clients who have been patient with us while we turned our attention elsewhere over the last couple of weeks. We’ll be getting our recent shoots processed asap.

And I have to thank one of our favorite clients, Elise who turned one a few weeks ago. She has been very patiently waiting for me to finish up her photos. Now that we’ve had a little break in the doctor action, I got a chance to get her shoot done. Thanks for waiting, Elise! (And mom and dad.)

Many Many Elgersmas

Dakota, by Kathleen Norris is one of my favorite books in the whole world. She writes about how people live in small towns, specifically on the plains of the Dakotas. Small towns are interesting. They can be beautiful places to visit, and terrible places to live. The people in these communities are wonderful hosts to visitors. They welcome them, bake for them, and bend over backwards to make sure a visitor’s short stay is as comfortable as possible. But move there, and you’re an outsider – forever. In her book, when a town has an opening for a new School Superintendent, Norris talks about hearing someone say, “I hope they don’t get someone who wants to change everything.” It’s this kind of insularity that preserves tight-knit communities, but can turn destructive when professionals from the outside stop offering themselves as resources to drive growth and vitality.

Church communities are similar to small towns, and I believe that being a pastor in a new church is one of the hardest paths to choose. With that, we welcome Scott Elgersma and his family! Scott is the new lead pastor at The River Christian Reformed Church in Redlands. His wife and kids are awesome. They love carne asada, so order extra when you make burritos for them. Scott had some extended family visiting a couple of weeks ago, and we took the opportunity to go out and get some photographs of the whole clan.
