They hadn’t taken professional photos since their wedding fourteen years ago! So I was honored to get the call to schedule a family shoot with the Nielsons. We had a great time walking around the park. I had no idea what a riot these guys are. Photo shoots tend to bring out the crazy in people, I think. Thanks Nielsons!

There was a fire in Riverside that night. The ash thrown into the air can make for a great sunset.

Goodbye Penns

The months have gone by too fast. We loved having the Penns out in SoCal for the year. It was really great to have a piece of my family (and the childhood memories that come with family) here in California with us. To cap off their time here in the golden state, we went to the beach for a day of photography and fun. We’ll miss you guys!

Still Catching Up – Rayna’s Graduation

I had the awesome privilege of photographing the Groshong family for a second time last month. This time, they brought some out-of-towners! I thought they were crazy before, but after meeting the rest of their family, I had no idea.

Hekmans

When I need help with my sprinklers, Matt is there for me. When I need someone to lend me gopher traps, Matt is the guy I call. The Hekmans have been friends of ours for years. Jess is incredibly creative and loves photography. She recently started her own photography business. Check her out! Their little family has grown by one since the last time I photographed them. We had a lot of fun with balloons and bubbles and jumping off of rocks.

Little Elise – Day 2

It was a good thing that we did Carmen and Jeff’s maternity shoot when we did, because little Elise did not wait more than a few days afterward to arrive. Jeff and Carmen are stoked to be a mom and pop team. This little girl is very lucky to go home with two parents that will love her like crazy, and a dog and a cat that will tolerate her because they have no other choice.

Kouwe Family

We’ve known the Kouwes since we moved out to Southern California. Jill and Denise teach together at Redlands Christian School, and Jim rocks out on the guitar most Sundays at church. These guys won a family shoot almost a year ago at the school’s Holland Festival, and it’s taken us this long to put a shoot together where both of their girls were in town at the same time. It was definitely worth the wait. We had a lot of fun walking around downtown Redlands taking photos.

A year ago, I got to do a shoot with these guys and their parents. This little guy was just a wee squirt. Now he’s running all over the place, squashing ladybugs and causing trouble. Nate and Becca don’t look a day older, of course.

Verhoef Family

There’s nothing like Christmas to bring everybody together. (In my family’s case we would finish that sentence with, “to share germs and get violently ill.”) This was a very special family session. Not only are Will and Ruth VIPs in our lives, but this session was won in the Holland Festival auction last spring. I was surprised and flattered to watch last May as the bidding for our photography session climbed up beyond $500 in the auction. Ruth knew that her four kids and their families would be coming to SoCal in Dec. 09 – perfect for family photographs – so she bid like crazy. We had a great time together during the session and got some beautiful shots..

And the pair that started it all…

The Perfect Christmas Gift!

Rebecca called us a couple of months ago. She wanted to give her parents a Christmas gift that they would really like, and we, of course, think that a family photo shoot is about the best gift you can think of. I learned a lot about Rebecca from her parents. I learned even more from her sister who claims to throw a football much better than Rebecca. Who knew?

The Kimm Family Christmas

Jill and I spent Christmas in Escondido with her sister’s family. Jill’s brother drove in with his dog from Arizona and we had a great time… mostly. Three of us got the flu one after another. First, Jill’s brother went down. Then Maddie started up-chucking (which she calls burps, kinda cute actually). It was a long night of holding an icecream bucket in front of my two-year old while we watched Milo and Otis. The next day was Christmas Eve and it was my turn. Christmas just isn’t Christmas when you’re afraid to eat everything. Don’t worry, I’m making up for it this week!

Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, they’re all great occasions to share with family. Unfortunately, they are also perfect opportunities to share germs with your families. I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas without the flu.

Here are few photos of the Kimm family the week before Christmas. It’s always fun to watch families interact with each other. These guys are not short on humor. It was fun, even on a rainy day like we had.
